Saving Lives and Families

The Electrical Industry Drug-Free Workplace Program was founded by NECA and IBEW Local 48 in 1990 as a pioneering effort to improve the health and safety of electrical workers and to enhance the productivity of the electrical industry. Now in its fourteenth year, our program is one of the top five self-funded industry programs in the nation.

Individuals tested include all bargaining as well as non-bargaining employees of participating employers. We are proud to report a positive rate of .8% which is far below the National average of 7%.

The Program has retained Providence Employee Assistance Program to coordinate all evaluations and treatment programs.  The Program has also retained the services of Dr. Kirby Griffin, M.D., Medical Review Officer, to review all positive test results.

Since the inception of the Program, Legacy Laboratory Services has provided the testing of all the specimens. Legacy Laboratory Services is a NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) certified lab.

The Program applies to all employees including maintenance, sales, clerical, management, owners and part-time employees working 20 or more hours a week, as well as applicants for any such position.

Safety is a Vital Concern

A Drug-Free Workplace benefits not only workers and their families but contractors and customers as well. A survey conducted by the International Labor Organization revealed that half of all industrial accidents are related to alcohol or drug abuse. Furthermore, abusers are four times as likely to have accidents as non-abusers. Not to mention the detrimental affect drug abuse has on families.

An important aspect of our program is the progressive attitude toward treatment. Instead of just firing an employee who tests positive, we believe in helping our members regain control of their lives and their careers. This results in healthy, drug-free workers and mutual respect between employers and employees. It also helps promote a stable workforce.

The success of this program speaks for itself. As with so many of the programs developed by NECA and IBEW Local 48, our Drug-Free Workplace program is serving as a model for other substance abuse programs throughout the nation.
